Easy Classes for Summer Session at Ucsd
The University of California, San Diego is a public research university in La Jolla, San Diego, California. It was established in 1960 and offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. With so many program and classes, sort through the muddle by checking out these ten easy classes from UCSD!
1. DSC 10 - Principles of Data Science
Data science is integral to essentially every field in this day and age. This introductory course develops computational thinking and tools necessary to analyze large-scale datasets. There is an emphasis on end-to-end approach to data science, introducing programming techniques in Python that cover data processing, modeling, and analysis.
2. HUM 5 - Modern Culture (1848–present)
If you're interested in history, but more into the humanities side, this class will suit you. The course covers challenges to liberalism posed by such movements as socialism, imperialism, and nationalism, as well as the growth of new forms of self-expression and new conceptions of individual psychology. There are also four other HUM classes for other time periods.
3. LIGN 3 - Language as a Social and Cultural Phenomenon
Language is fundamental to everything in the world, because it's the way we communicate. This linguistics class discusses the role of language in thought, myth, ritual, advertising, politics, and the law. You'll also learn about language variation, change, and loss; multilingualism, pidginization and creolization; language planning, standardization, and prescriptivism; and writing systems.
4. ANTH 2 - Human Origins
If you've ever wondered about where humans come from, this class may interest you. This four credit course gives an introduction to human evolution from the perspective of physical anthropology, including evolutionary theory and the evolution of the primates, hominids, and modern humans. There is emphasis on on evidence from fossil remains and behavioral studies of living primates.
5. MUS 1A - Fundamentals of Music A
This four credit course requires no musical prerequisites and is designed for students without previous experience. The class will introduce music notation and basic music theory topics such as intervals, scales, keys, and chords, as well as basic rhythm skills. There is a MUS 1B and MUS 1C that follow MUS 1A in sequence.
6. POLI 5 or 5D - Data Analytics for the Social Sciences
If you're interested in political science, this introductory class will earn you four credits. The course gives an introduction to probability and analysis for understanding data in the social world. You will get hands-on learning with applied social science problems using probability, visual display of data, data collection and management, hypothesis testing, and computation.
7. CHIN 10AN - First Year Chinese—Non-native speakers I
As one of the most spoken languages in the world, you are more than likely to encounter some Chinese later down the line. Designed for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese, this class gives an entry-level overview of Chinese and communicative skills. You'll learn about pronunciation, fundamentals of Chinese grammar, and vocabulary.
8. VIS 11 - Introduction to Visual Arts
The visual arts department is not very commonly found across the nation, so take advantage of it if it interests you. This course examines the significant topics in art practice, theory, and history that are shaping contemporary art thinking. You'll delve into studio art practice, digital media, performative practices, and public culture.
9. ENVR 30 - Environmental Issues: Natural Sciences
No matter your field, issues with our environment affects everyone. This course examines global and regional environmental issues, and resulting policy options. You'll discuss problems such as air and water pollution, climate modification, solid waste disposal, hazardous waste treatment, and environmental impact assessment.
10. TDAC 1 - Introduction to Acting
If you've ever been interested in acting, this is your chance! This course simply covers the fundamentals of acting: establishing a working vocabulary and basic skills of the acting process. You'll do exercises, compositions, and improvisations.
